Virtual Support Group for Divorced Mothers: A Lifeline of Support and Empowerment
The Virtual Support Group for divorced mothers, initiated by EPIC Family’s Parental Guidance Center, was born during the challenging times of COVID-19, when families were confined to their homes. For mothers already struggling with the complexities of single parenthood, the lockdown added a new layer of stress. They found themselves isolated, locked in with their children, and without the usual support systems. Many were especially nervous as Pesach approached, realizing that they couldn’t join others as they had in previous years.
Recognizing the urgent need for a support network, Shana Pogrow, MSW, director of the Parental Guidance Center, launched the Virtual Support Group, co-facilitated by Dr. Debbie Akerman, a clinical psychologist specializing in trauma and family therapy. This group has provided these mothers with the tools they needed to manage their unique challenges during the pandemic. It was so impactful that, after Pesach, one child even told his mother that they had such a good time staying home that they should always spend Chagim together at home.
Due to its overwhelming success, the group continued well beyond the initial crisis and has since become a vital resource for divorced mothers worldwide.
Over 150 mothers have joined us online since its inception. Today, it continues to offer a safe and compassionate space where women can connect, share their struggles, and receive guidance and emotional support from professionals and peers alike.
Under Shana Pogrow’s and Dr. Akerman’s leadership, the group goes beyond addressing immediate challenges. It fosters a strong sense of community and connection, helping mothers regain control of their lives and rebuild their self-confidence. One participant, Mrs. Schwartz, shared her powerful story with Rabbi Goodman, explaining how the group changed her life. “After my divorce, I was completely lost. I was depressed and couldn’t function, even though I had a toddler to care for. Joining the support group turned everything around for me.”
Mrs. Schwartz described how Dr. Akerman’s guidance gave her the strength to reshape her life. She enrolled in school with newfound confidence, earned a degree, and began a new career. Beyond her professional achievements, the group helped her rebuild her self-esteem, giving her the confidence to start dating again. Today, she is remarried and happily embracing a new chapter in her life. Her story is just one of many, reflecting the transformative power of this virtual support network.
The Virtual Support Group for divorced mothers remains a beacon of hope, offering practical tools, emotional support, and a sense of community. What began as a lifeline during the pandemic has evolved into a longstanding, empowering program that continues to inspire and uplift women from around the globe.
